I recently got my hands on the Savage 17 HMR with a heavy barrel, and I have to say, the accuracy is impressive! It’s stable and reliable at various distances, making it great for both target practice and small game hunting.

Absolutely! The heavy barrel really helps with reducing barrel whip. I’ve shot groups tighter than expected even at 100 yards. It’s definitely a solid choice for precision shooting.

Agreed! But how does the weight influence carrying it during hunts? I’ve heard mixed opinions on its portability.

While it’s a bit heavier, I think the trade-off is worth it for accuracy. Just plan shorter treks, and you’ll be fine! Plus, it’s easier to keep steady when shooting.

I’ve used mine mostly for target practice at the range, and it’s a joy to shoot! It holds groups really well up to 150 yards. Perfect for honing in your skills.

I hear you! Each shot feels satisfying with that heavy barrel. On another note, has anyone tried it for varmint hunting? How does it perform on small critters?

Yes! I’ve used it for groundhog hunting and it’s fantastic. The accuracy at 200 yards is just phenomenal. They don’t stand a chance! Just make sure to use quality ammunition for best results.

That’s reassuring! I’m planning a hunting trip soon. Should I stick to 17 HMR or is there a better option for coyotes around? Just want to ensure I’m well-prepared.

For coyotes, you might want a heavier caliber, like a .223, but if you’re comfortable with the 17 HMR, it’s definitely doable—just aim for a perfect shot.

You know, I’ve seen folks create hunting stories filled with mishaps using the 17 HMR. Makes me wonder if it’s really the right choice for larger prey. Anyone else had experience?

Haha, I get that! The right conditions matter a ton. It’s all about shot placement. If in doubt, trust your instincts and maybe stick to smaller game!

I’m also looking into modifications for the Savage 17 HMR. A wood stock can provide better recoil absorption and a classic feel. Have you thought about adding a cheekweld pad for enhanced comfort?

That’s a great point! A comfortable cheek weld can improve accuracy significantly. What types of wood do you think would look best? Walnut or maple?

I prefer using walnut for its strong and beautiful grain. Plus, with proper care, it lasts a long time. Anyone here tried upgrading to a full bedded stock?

I haven’t, but I hear it can greatly improve precision. Does that modification also add weight?

Yes, full bedding usually adds some weight, but it’s worth it for accuracy. Keep in mind that a heavier setup can help dampen recoil as well! Have you thought about customizing the finish on the wood?

A nice finish can make the stock stand out! I’m considering a hand-rubbed oil finish for a natural look. What are everyone else’s preferences for finishing?

Sounds beautiful! I think a high-gloss finish would really highlight the grain, but I worry about scratches. How do you all protect your wood stocks?

I just keep mine in a soft case when not in use. It’s great for protection and prevents dings. I also lightly oil it regularly to keep it looking good! Anyone tried applying a coat of wax?
