The best time to hunt mule deer during the rut in New Mexico is typically from late October to mid-November. Areas like the Gila National Forest and the Carson National Forest are prime spots for finding them.

Absolutely! I’ve had great success hunting around the Bandelier National Monument during that time. The deer are more active.

Another great place is the San Juan Mountains. The terrain can be rough, but it’s worth it for the trophy mule deer during the rut.

Definitely! I always find that the mornings are better during the rut. Has anyone noticed that trend as well?

Yes, mornings are typically the best! But don’t count out the evenings. Those prime feeding times can bring deer out as well.

I agree! As for locations, don’t overlook the Lincoln National Forest. I’ve had some of my best hunts there.

Lincoln is a great choice! Do you have any tips for navigating the area? It can be a bit overwhelming.

I’ve found that using a good map and knowing the trails before you go in can save a lot of time. Plus, staying quiet is key!

Hunting mule deer during the rut in New Mexico is all about timing! Generally, the peak rut occurs in mid-November. During this time, males become more aggressive and less cautious, making them more visible.

That’s interesting! I’ve noticed they seem to roam more at this time. Does it change their feeding patterns as well?

Yes, actually! During the rut, mule deer may skip usual feeding times, spending more time chasing does. It’s crucial to scout areas where they’ve been seen to strategize your hunt effectively.

Good point! So locating water sources should be part of my strategy since they still need to hydrate, right?

Absolutely! During the rut, place yourself near water sources, especially in the early morning or late evening. It can increase your chances significantly.

I’m learning so much from this! I’ve always assumed mid-November was the best, but should I also consider moon phases? I’ve heard the full moon can affect their activity.

Great question! Yes, moon phases can indeed influence deer movement. They may be more active during peak illumination times.

While moon phases matter, don’t forget to watch for weather changes too. Cold fronts can trigger increased activity in deer during the rut.
