What Size Shot Do You Use for Duck Hunting?

I’m gearing up for the upcoming duck hunting season and I’m trying to figure out what size shot is best for different types of ducks. I’ve heard a lot of recommendations but I’m looking for some solid advice from experienced hunters.

Here are a few questions I have:

  • What shot sizes are typically recommended for mallards, teal, and divers?
  • Are there specific conditions, like wind or distance, that would change your recommendation?
  • What are the pros and cons of using larger vs. smaller shot sizes?

I want to make sure I’m well-prepared and using the right gear to optimize my chances. Any insights or personal experiences you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help.

I’ve always used #2 shot for bigger ducks like mallards. It packs a punch and usually drops them quickly!

I prefer #4 for teal; it feels like a good balance between range and spread. What does everyone think about #6 for smaller ducks?

For teal or pintails, #4 is awesome, but in windy conditions, I’d stick with #2. The wind can really affect your shots.

I’ve heard people say #6 is just too small, but in areas where you need a tight spread, it can actually work well for those faster, smaller ducks.

That’s a good point! Have any of you tried mixed loads? Sometimes I mix #4 and #2 for versatility.

I generally go with #3 shot as a compromise. It handles well for both big and small ducks. Anyone else in this camp?

#3 is a solid choice! However, I still think #2 is the best if you’re hunting in heavy cover.

I can see why you’d favor #2 for cover! I just hope people don’t turn up with #8 thinking they can take down ducks. That would be a disaster.

Ha! #8 for ducks would be a sight! Honestly though, I keep it simple with either #2 or #4 and let my aim do the talking.

Sounds like you’ve got a great approach! But what do you all think about varying conditions—rain, fog, any impact on shot choice?

Definitely! Wet conditions can change how you would normally shoot. A bit more spread like #4 might be needed then. Just gotta adapt!

When it comes to duck hunting, I typically use #2 or #4 shot. It really depends on the distance I’m shooting. If I’m close, #4 does the job nicely, but I go with #2 for longer distances.

Great point! The environment plays a huge role too. I find that marshes often require a different approach than open fields.

Absolutely! I usually hunt in marshes, so I prefer #3 shot because it offers a nice balance between power and spread in a dense environment. It really does make a difference.

That sounds solid! I always wondered if #3 might be too much for closer shots. What do you think?

For sure, #3 can be a bit overkill up close but it does provide enough knockdown power. I think it boils down to your confidence with your setup and the type of ducks you’re targeting.

Haha, I once took a shot with #6 thinking it would do the trick up close. Let’s just say that duck went on a vacation instead! Lesson learned: wrong shot size can make for a great story but a missed bird.

Exactly! The shot size often changes based on your hunting style too. Are you going for quick shots or longer ones?

For me, it’s usually about combining skill and environment. In open fields, I think #2 works better, but in smaller areas, I stick to #4 or #5. It’s just safer for the wildlife around.
