Thoughts on Kel-Tec P17 with Red Dot - Tips Needed!

I recently picked up a Kel-Tec P17, and I’m considering adding a red dot sight to enhance my shooting experience.

Questions I have:

  • What red dot sights have you found to work best with the P17? I want something that balances well without adding too much weight.
  • Are there any specific mounting options you recommend? I’ve heard some sights can be tricky to install or align properly on this model.
  • What performance improvements have you noticed? Any real differences in accuracy or target acquisition time?

I’m also curious about any potential issues or challenges you’ve faced while using a red dot on the P17. Your insights would be greatly appreciated, as I’m looking to make an informed decision before pulling the trigger on a purchase!

I’ve had my KEL-TEC P17 for a couple of months now and decided to pair it with a Holosun 507K. The accuracy has improved significantly! It’s easier to aim, especially for quick follow-up shots.

That’s awesome to hear! I’m curious, did you need to make any modifications to mount the sight securely?

I echo what Bethany said. I paired mine with a Vortex Venom. I found that adjusting the brightness helped a lot in different lighting conditions. A great upgrade for this pistol!

What kind of modifications did you find necessary for the Venom? Also, any tips on battery life?

Honestly, I didn’t need to modify much for the Vortex. Just the right riser mount, and you’re good to go! Battery life is decent, just keep a spare handy during extended range trips.

I’ve noticed that a lot of people recommend lightweight red dots for the P17. I tried a cheaper one and couldn’t get a consistent zero. What are your thoughts on budget options?

My experience with cheaper optics was similar. Sometimes you get what you pay for! What brands have you all had success with?

I agree with vcarroll. I’ve had mixed results with budget sights. The Sig Romeo series seems like a solid option for a decent price. Very reliable!

Do you find the P17 balance well with the heavier sights like the Romeo? I imagine it might feel top-heavy compared to lighter options.

That’s an interesting point, Sheila. While heavier sights might shift the balance, I think they can also add a more stable aiming platform. Just a matter of preference, I suppose!

I have to agree, balancing weight is key. Also, the red dot isn’t just for looks - it makes getting on target much faster, which is what matters most. Just stay away from those poorly made ones!

I’ve been using the Trijicon RMR on my P17, and I can’t recommend it enough! The clarity is superb, and it’s tough enough to handle any situation. Just ensure you get a proper adapter plate.

That’s awesome! I’ve heard great things about the RMR. What about the mounting process? Is it straightforward?

This is a great thread! I recently installed a Vortex Venom, and for the price, it’s fantastic. Clear glass, easy to zero, but the battery life could be better. Still, it’s a solid choice!

I’ll second the Vortex Venom! I love how lightweight it is. Any tips on maintaining it?

I’ve been considering a Holosun 507K for my P17. Has anyone tried it? I’ve read mixed reviews, mainly about the reticle options.

I’m actually leaning towards the Holosun as well, Kelley. I’ve heard the multi-reticle system is handy, but I’m worried about its battery life. Anyone have experience?

In my opinion, battery life can be a bit of a concern with the Holosun series, but you can leave it on and it’ll last a good while. Just don’t forget to check it regularly!

I’d also suggest checking out the Sig Sauer Romeo5. It’s affordable and reliable, with features that compete with more expensive models. Definitely worth a look!
