Ruger SP101 vs GP100: Which One Should I Choose?

I’m currently in the market for a new revolver and can’t decide between the Ruger SP101 and the GP100. I’m particularly interested in their differences when it comes to home defense and concealed carry. Here’s what I’m considering:

  • Size and Weight: How do they compare? I know the SP101 is a bit smaller, but is that a big enough difference for daily carry?
  • Caliber Capacity: I’ve heard the GP100 can hold more rounds. Is that a significant advantage for self-defense situations?
  • Handling and Recoil: For those who have shot both, how does the recoil feel? Is one easier to manage than the other?
  • Personal Experiences: If you’ve owned either (or both), I’d love to hear your recommendations or any issues you’ve encountered.

I’m looking for something reliable, but also comfortable to carry around. Any advice or insights on which revolver would suit my needs better would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for all your help!

TL;DR: SP101 vs GP100 for home defense & concealed carry - which is better?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

I’ve owned both the Ruger SP101 and GP100. The SP101 has less recoil, making it easier for quick follow-up shots. However, the GP100 is a bit more stable due to its weight. It really depends on what you’re looking for in your shooting experience.

That’s a great point! I find the SP101’s trigger pull to be smooth as butter compared to the GP100. It’s an enjoyable revolver to shoot, but you sacrifice some power.

I haven’t shot the SP101, but the GP100’s handling is superb. It absorbs recoil well and feels solid in my hands. The added weight does help with stability!

Exactly! The GP100’s heavier build means less felt recoil for me. I also love its sight picture—it just seems more forgiving for longer shots.

I would recommend trying both at a range. While I favor the SP101 for its compactness, the GP100 can’t be beat for accuracy at distance. It really comes down to how you intend to use it.

Totally agree! Some users might prefer the SP101 for everyday carry. Its lighter weight really shines when you need to strap it on for a while.

I’ve read reviews mentioning the GP100’s superior accuracy with full loads compared to the SP101. If you’re serious about long-range shooting, the GP100 stands out.

That’s true! But the SP101 is great for defensive situations. Quick handling can make all the difference in a pinch!

It’s also worth noting that the GP100 has a slightly heavier trigger pull, which some might find discouraging. It takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s manageable.

Good to know! I think I’ll just need more practice. If only I could clone myself; I’d try both revolvers all day long!

All in all, it seems like the decision boils down to personal preference. Whether you’re after something compact like the SP101 or a robust unit like the GP100, you can’t go wrong as long as you know your needs.

I’ve owned both the SP101 and GP100. For concealed carry, I definitely prefer the SP101. It’s smaller and lighter, making it easier to carry all day without discomfort.

I agree! The SP101 really shines for CCW due to its compact size. I often forget I have it on me.

While the SP101 is great, don’t underestimate the GP100. For longer trips, its extra weight helps mitigate recoil which can be a plus if you’re shooting a lot.

True, but for everyday carry, the SP101 is so much more comfortable. I switch to the GP100 only at the range.

Has anyone found a good holster for the SP101? Comfort is key for me, and I want something that conceals well without needing to wear bulky clothing.

I’ve had good luck with the Crossbreed Mini Tuck. It’s comfortable and keeps the gun concealed well.

I love my GP100 for home defense but it is not my first choice for carrying. The weight can be noticeable after a while, especially on a hot day.

Exactly! I remember carrying my GP100 during a convention—it felt like a workout by noon. Stick with the SP101 for most scenarios.
