Layering is an art! I also wear a lightweight under layer and add my down pants on top. Finally, I put on an outer shell that’s both windproof and waterproof. Works like a charm!
That’s a solid strategy, but remember to test your mobility when fully dressed! Nothing worse than feeling like a marshmallow when trying to climb a tree.
Why not mix and match? I like to wear cargo pants underneath for an additional layer if it’s really cold, but sometimes the bulk drives me crazy. Anyone else struggle with this?
Yes! Sometimes I feel like the Michelin man in multiple layers. I’ve started opting for lighter outer layers to combat that feeling. Worth a try!
My down pants definitely keep me warm, but I relive the horror of every hunting trip when I realize I forgot my gloves. Not perfect combo, but always layer smart! Lesson learned, folks!
I’m looking for the best down pants too! My old ones are losing their loft. For maintenance, make sure to wash them in a front-loading machine with a gentle detergent and tumble dry them on low with some tennis balls to restore the loft. Any other tips?
Great tips! I also recommend storing down pants in a breathable bag rather than a vacuum-sealed one to maintain their loft. Has anyone tried the washing with vinegar trick?
You can definitely use a little vinegar in the wash. It helps eliminate odors without damaging the down. I hang mine to dry, but I know that might not work for everyone. What does everyone else do for drying?
I’ve been tumble drying but never thought about the tennis balls! Definitely going to add that to my routine. Thanks!
For storage, I also recommend using a large cotton bag instead of the original stuff sack. It helps to keep it fluffy and avoids compression. Just don’t store them in a damp area, right?
Absolutely! Keeping them in a dry place is crucial. I tend to store mine in my basement, which I now realize could be a bad idea. Anyone have other good storage tips?
It’s funny how we all have our quirks! I keep mine in the top of my closet, but I worry about that changing temperature. Do you all find that affects loft?
You’re right, temperature does matter! The loft can be affected by humidity too. Keep them dry and not directly in sunlight when storing.
Speaking of sunlight, I like to air mine out after a long hunting trip. I just lay them flat in the shade. A bit of fresh air works wonders!
That’s a good point! I might try airing mine out soon after a trip. I can’t be the only one who tends to forget about them once I get home!
Haha, I wouldn’t call it forgetfulness; I prefer to think of it as delayed processing! But seriously, those tennis balls are a game changer. Have you all tried using dryer balls for extra loft boost?
