Looking for Feedback on the Smith and Wesson 4506-1

Introduction

I’m diving deeper into the world of pistols, and I’ve recently come across the Smith and Wesson 4506-1. I’ve heard a lot about its legacy and performance but would love to know more from the community.

What to Discuss

Here are some specific aspects I’d like feedback on:

  • Performance: How does the 4506-1 handle during shooting? Any noticeable differences compared to the standard 4506?
  • Reliability: What has your experience been with jams or failures? Is it a trusty sidearm?
  • Ergonomics: How does it feel in hand? Are there any modifications you’d recommend?
  • Historical Context: For the gun enthusiasts, any interesting facts about its production history?

Personal Experience

I’ve only had my hands on a few models so far, but I’m curious if this model suits both casual range days and home defense. I’ve seen some varying opinions on Reddit, and I want to gather collective wisdom from here.

Conclusion

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts, experiences, and any tips or modifications you’ve found helpful! Let’s see if this classic holds up, or if it’s just a relic of the past.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

I’ve had my S&W 4506-1 for over a year now, and it’s performed flawlessly. The shooting experience is solid with minimal recoil, which makes it enjoyable at the range. Highly reliable too!

I completely agree! The recoil is so manageable that even new shooters feel at ease. I took my brother for his first range visit, and he loved it!

I’ve found the accuracy to be impressive. I can consistently hit targets at 25 yards with no issue. It’s really a great firearm for both practice and home defense.

That’s impressive! What kind of ammo have you been using? I’ve noticed that some could affect the accuracy depending on the load.

As a newbie, I find the 4506-1 a bit bulky, but I guess that makes it more stable when firing. Overall, it seems like a well-built pistol that many enjoy.

I had a great experience with mine too! I’ve put about 500 rounds through it without any malfunctions. It’s definitely a reliable choice.

It is a larger piece, but that bulk does give it a sturdy feel. It’s a trade-off I’m willing to make for its reliability!

I’ve mixed feelings about the trigger pull—it feels a bit heavy to me compared to other guns. Has anyone else noticed this?

You’re not alone! Some people prefer a lighter trigger, while others like it that way for safety reasons. It takes a bit of getting used to.

I’ve noticed a few jams with mine, but maybe that’s just me. I clean it regularly, but sometimes it just doesn’t feed right. Anyone else had this issue?

Could it be the type of ammo you’re using? I had a similar issue until I switched to higher-quality rounds.

I was pleasantly surprised at how accurate it is in my hands. The sights are easy to align, and it makes for a great day at the range with friends!

Absolutely! Plus, I think the hefty design adds a bit of humor when trying to keep it steady while shooting. Feels like lifting a small brick!

I’ve had my Smith and Wesson 4506-1 for a few years now and I love its solid construction. The weight gives it a great balance during shooting. How does it compare to other .45s like the Glock 21? Any thoughts?

I think the Glock 21 is lighter and has a higher mag capacity. But the 4506-1 feels better in hand, at least for me. Ergonomics matter a lot!

I really enjoy the grip on the 4506-1; it’s way more comfortable than some competitors. I used to have a Colt 1911 and found the recoil management better with the Smith.

True, but that comes down to personal preference. The 4506-1 seems built for reliability; I’ve never had a malfunction after thousands of rounds!

It’s interesting to hear you guys talk about reliability. I’ve read some reviews saying the 4506-1 isn’t as easy to find parts for compared to Glock models. Any truth to that?

I’ve always had good luck with parts, but I suppose it depends on your area. User satisfaction overall tends to lean positively; most folks love the 4506-1!
