Looking for a Winchester Model 88 .308 Review: What's the Verdict?

Introduction

I’ve recently been considering the Winchester Model 88 in .308 for my next hunting trip and I’m curious to get some feedback from those who have experience with this rifle. The Model 88 has a great reputation, but I want to dig deeper into its performance and capabilities.

Performance & Accuracy

From what I’ve read, the .308 caliber is a popular choice for big game hunting. I’m particularly interested in hearing about its accuracy at various ranges. How does it hold up in the field? Any thoughts on group sizes at 100 yards and beyond?

Design Features

The lever-action mechanism is quite appealing to me. Its classic design coupled with modern functionality makes it an interesting option. Does the rifle feel solid when firing? Is it easy to operate, even with gloves on? Any specific features that stand out to you?

Reliability

Reliability in different conditions is crucial for any hunting rifle. I’d love to hear personal stories or any issues you’ve faced with the Model 88. How does it perform in the rain, mud, or cold weather? Did you encounter any malfunctions?

Comparison with Other Rifles

If anyone has shot other rifles in the same category, I’d appreciate comparisons. How does the Winchester Model 88 stack up against other lever-action rifles or bolt-actions in .308?

Your Thoughts

If you own one or have shot it, please share your personal experiences or reviews and any tips you’ve learned along the way. Would you recommend it to someone thinking of making a purchase?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I’ve owned a Winchester Model 88 in .308 for over a year now. It performs admirably in the field. I’ve taken it out in various conditions, and it has not let me down. Very reliable!

That’s great to hear, nrivera! I’m curious about its handling in tight spots. Is it easy to maneuver?

In response to kelly40, I find the Model 88 pretty compact. It’s not the lightest rifle, but it balances well when you’re shooting in the brush.

Overall, I have to agree with you all. My experience has been positive, but my only complaint is the old-style trigger. It’s a bit heavy for my taste.

I’ve shot mine in snowy weather and it performed perfectly. I didn’t have any reliability issues whatsoever. What conditions have others used it in?

I’ve mostly used mine at the range on sunny days. No problems, but not much rigorous testing!

I took mine out during a rainy day hunt. It was a little slippery, but as long as I kept it dry, it performed really well!

Reading all these posts makes me feel like I need to get back out there! How does it perform against other rifles in the same category?

Interesting point, zbennett! I’ve been looking at some newer models…what do you think makes the Model 88 better?

In my opinion, the Model 88 has a classic feel that newer rifles sometimes lack. I prefer it over some other contemporary options.

For me, it’s all about the aesthetics and nostalgia. Plus, I feel it can handle slightly rougher conditions than some of the newer plastic ones!

I’m honestly tempted to pick one up just for nostalgia’s sake! What’s the average price these days?

Prices vary, but expect to pay around $700-$800 for a good condition Model 88. Sometimes you can find deals if you’re patient!

I’m no pricing expert, but I bought mine used for $650, and it was still in great shape! Maybe look for local sales?

I’ve had a Winchester Model 88 in .308 for years. It’s known for its smooth action and solid build. In terms of accuracy, it holds its own against some of the more popular rifles like the Remington 700.

Absolutely agree! The build quality is impressive, but how does it compare in terms of value? Is it really worth the price tag?

Value for money-wise, I believe the Model 88 competes well, especially if you find a good used one. Have you checked its resale value? It’s often higher than other models, which is a plus.

That’s a great point! I’ve been researching and noticed that the Winchester 88 holds its value quite well compared to others. What about its accuracy under different conditions?

In varied weather conditions, I’ve found my Model 88 to perform consistently, but it may not outshoot high-end rifles like the Tikka T3. Still, it’s dependable for hunting.
