Looking for .38 Special Reloading Data with Unique Powder

Seeking Reloading Data for .38 Special with Unique Powder

I’ve recently started reloading my own .38 Special ammunition and I’ve been experimenting with Unique powder, but I’m a bit lost when it comes to finding the right load data. I understand that getting the right powder charge is crucial for both performance and safety, so I’m really looking for some guidance here.

What I’m Looking For

  • Powder Charges: If anyone has experience with Unique powder in .38 Special, what charges do you recommend?
  • Crimping Techniques: I’ve read that crimping can make or break a round. How do you crimp your .38 Special rounds effectively?
  • Best Practices: Any tips on optimizing accuracy or ensuring a clean burn would be greatly appreciated.
  • Unique Suitability: How does Unique compare with other powders you’ve tried for .38 Special? Are there specific loads where it shines?

Current Setup

  • I’m using a Lee Loader and a basic scale for measuring my charges. My goal is to create a reliable and accurate target load, suitable for both training and casual shooting.
  • Additionally, I’m curious about any pitfalls to avoid when starting with Unique as my primary powder.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences, and any load data you’re willing to share. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey everyone! I’m just getting into reloading and I’m looking for .38 Special recipes using Unique powder. Any best practices or tips for beginners would be super helpful!

Welcome, Theresa! When reloading .38 Special, start by ensuring you have a reliable scale. Safety is crucial, so always double-check your charges before seating bullets.

Great advice! I also recommend using a good loading manual for .38 Special loads with Unique powder. It can guide you on safe powder charges.

I agree with Imarks! Start with a recognized reloading manual. Plus, always wear safety glasses. Reloading is fun but requires respect for the materials!

What about specific loads with Unique powder? I’m curious if anyone has personal favorite loads for accuracy.

I’ve had great luck with 4.0 grains of Unique under a 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter. Consistent and fun to shoot!

That’s awesome, Hrivera! Make sure to crimp properly to avoid any setback in the cylinder when firing. A little crimp goes a long way in .38 Special.

Anyone else find that Unique can be a bit dirty? It’s a great powder, but I always have to clean my gun after a session.

Haha, yes! It’s got that charming ‘sooty’ finish. Just part of the fun, I guess! Anyone tried using a different powder for a cleaner burn?

For cleaner options, you might want to consider using Hodgdon HP-38. I’ve found it to be cleaner burning than Unique.

That’s good to know! However, I love how Unique performs for standard loads. It’s all about finding what works best for you!

Definitely! More choices = more fun! Just make sure you have the right equipment, like a good press and case trimmer for consistent results.

What’s the essential equipment list for new reloaders? I want to make sure I’m starting off right!

Essential gear includes a reloading press, scales, a powder measure, and a good caliper. Safety gear like glasses and gloves are also a must!

I’m looking to start reloading .38 Special with Unique powder as well! Does anyone have a good starting load for 158 gr lead cast bullets?

I usually go with around 4.5 grains of Unique. It gives a nice balance of accuracy and recoil. Just be sure to keep an eye on your case lengths!

Hey, I’ve done quite a bit of .38 Special loading with Unique myself. For 125 gr jacketed bullets, I like 5.0 grains. It feels like magic in my revolver!

I prefer CCI primers with Unique. They tend to give a more consistent ignition across my loads. What’s the consensus out there on different primers?

That sounds interesting! What type of primer do you pair with that load? I’m testing out different combos.
