Looking for 147gr 9mm Load Data – What Works Best?

Seeking Load Data for 147gr 9mm

I’m diving into the world of reloading and I’m particularly interested in the 147 grain 9mm loads. I’ve read quite a bit, but I’m hoping to gather some specific data from the community to ensure I’m on the right path.

What I’m Looking For

I’m particularly keen on:

  • Recommended type of powders (I’ve heard varying opinions on different brands)
  • Ideal COL (Cartridge Overall Length) for varying bullet types
  • Personal experiences with different 147gr bullet brands
  • Safe load ranges for both target shooting and competitive shooting

My Setup

Currently, I have access to:

  • A Lee Pro 1000 press
  • A variety of powders including Unique, Bullseye, and W231 (though I’m open to suggestions)
  • Mostly using plated or coated bullets; looking to experiment with some JHPs as well

Anyone with Recipes to Share?

If you have a favorite load recipe or any tips that have worked well for you, I would greatly appreciate it! It’s always nice to learn from experiences, especially for a relatively novice reloader like me.

Safety First!

I understand the importance of safety in reloading, so any warnings or advice regarding provenance of resources or recommended practices would be extremely helpful.

Looking forward to your insights!

I’m looking for a good load setup for 147gr 9mm as well. I’ve heard that WSF is a popular choice because it burns clean and gives decent velocity. Anyone here used it?

I can back that up! I’ve had great results with WSF too. It tends to produce accurate loads with minimal fouling. Have also tried Titegroup, but it felt a bit snappy for my tastes.

I’ve experimented with a few powders. Power Pistol offers a nice balance between speed and recoil, but it can be a bit dirty. Do any of you prefer something else?

I agree, but I find that it burns too fast at times for the 147gr bullet. Have you tried Universal? It’s slower and can provide a softer recoil.

I love Universal for 147gr! It allows for consistent performance and accuracy. Plus, the versatility across calibers is a bonus. What charge weight are you using with it?

Right now, I’m at 4.5 grains with Universal. Feels stable, but I’m curious if anyone’s hit the sweet spot with a different grain weight for 147gr?

I find it fascinating how many options there are! I tried 3N37; it had some impressive results but requires careful handling due to its sensitivity. Has anyone else had mixed results with it?

I’ve shied away from it due to that. It sounds productive, but I prefer powders that are a bit more forgiving. Any thoughts on Hodgdon HP-38?

HP-38 is decent too! It provides slightly lower velocities, but accuracy usually makes up for it. You can stretch it further with a lighter load. Anyone weighed their options regarding primers with these powders?

Great point! I like to use CCI primers for most powders. They seem reliable, but I’ve heard mixed opinions about that. What do you guys think?

I stick with Federal primers for consistency. Each type brings something different to the table. Just make sure you do a proper test! Sometimes I feel like it’s almost an alchemy experiment!

I’m currently experimenting with 147gr loads and have found that a COL of 1.140" seems to function well in my Glock. It aids in cycling smoothly and enhances accuracy. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I’ve been using a slightly shorter length, about 1.130". I’ve noticed fewer feeding issues in my Sig. It really seems to depend on the firearm.

It’s interesting how even small changes in overall length can impact performance. My friend tested 1.150" and found it to be very reliable, but he wasn’t happy with the accuracy at longer distances.

Right? It makes you really pay attention to details. What powder do you guys use with your 147gr loads? I’ve been using Tightgroup.

I use WST for my loads; it seems to give me a consistent burn and good accuracy. I usually stick to about 1.135" in length, but I’m curious about longer setups, as I’ve heard positive feedback.

I’ve had mixed results with longer OALs, sometimes causing jams in my older gun. Range-tested 1.125" and it worked like a charm. Definitely a case of trial and error.

I’ve read that the bullet profile can change the ideal OAL too. Have any of you experienced this with different brands?

Great point! The way the bullet seats can vary based on the brand. I’ve found that a flatter meplat helps with feeding, especially in competitive shooting.
