I’m gearing up for this turkey season, and I’m thinking of upgrading my shotgun setup with a red dot sight. I’ve heard mixed reviews and recommendations, so I’m here seeking advice on the best options available.
Why a Red Dot?
I’ve been considering a red dot sight because I want to improve my accuracy and targeting speed when spotting turkeys. I’m aware that it provides quick target acquisition, which is crucial when dealing with these fast-moving birds.
What to Look For
I’m particularly interested in:
Optical Quality: Clarity and brightness are key, especially in low-light conditions.
Durability: Turkey hunting can be demanding, so I need something rugged that can withstand the elements.
Ease of Mounting: I want something that’s easy to install on my shotgun without much hassle.
Budget: I’m not looking to break the bank, but I also don’t want a cheap model that won’t hold up.
Recommendations?
Does anyone have recommendations on specific models? What’s been your experience using red dots for turkey hunting? Are there budget-friendly options that still perform well? Or do you think investing in a higher-end model is worth it for the added performance?
User Experiences
If you’ve used a red dot sight for turkey hunting, I’d love to hear your insights:
How easy was it to sight in?
Did you notice a significant improvement in your success rate?
Would you recommend your sight to a fellow hunter?
Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences! Any help is greatly appreciated as I prepare for the upcoming hunting season!
I’ve been using the Vortex Viper for turkey hunting. It’s lightweight, has clear optics, and the battery life is great. The 6 MOA dot is pretty easy to see in the woods. Highly recommend it!
I definitely recommend checking out the Trijicon RMR. It’s built to take a beating and is waterproof. The clarity of the glass is top-notch and it’s adjustable for brightness, which is a big plus for different hunting conditions!
Weight is definitely a concern! I’ve used the Bushnell TRS-25, which is compact and light. It still provides a good red dot that works well for turkey hunting without adding too much bulk to your shotgun.
In my experience, the Bushnell TRS-25 can handle rough conditions, but not as well as the higher-end options. If you can, I’d invest in something like the Aimpoint PRO for durability and performance in varying environments.
Absolutely! If you plan to go turkey hunting multiple times, a quality sight like the Aimpoint PRO can make a huge difference in accuracy and ease, making it worthwhile.
Don’t forget to consider the mounting options as well! Some sights can be specific to certain shotguns, and you wouldn’t want to find out too late that it won’t fit your setup.
For turkey hunting, a secure mount is crucial! Look for red dot sights with co-witness capabilities to ensure you can still see your bead sight if needed. Brands like Vortex and Trijicon offer solid options.
Great point! Make sure to check if your shotgun has a pre-drilled receiver or if you’ll need an adapter. I’ve had to experiment to find what works best for mine.
I’ve had good luck with an Aimpoint Micro. It mounts securely and offers great battery life. Plus, it’s pretty lightweight, which is important for a shotgun!
Aimpoint is solid! But I think EOTech sights are equally worthy of consideration. They provide a wide field of view that’s really helpful in the field.
I agree with the importance of fit. Just be sure that your red dot sits comfortably behind the action. Nothing worse than a sight that’s too far forward or back for your shooting style!
