Best Counties in Kentucky for Trophy Deer: Where Should I Hunt?

I’ve been doing a lot of research lately on the best spots in Kentucky for deer hunting, specifically where I might have the best chance of bagging a trophy buck. I’m hoping some experienced hunters here can share their insights and personal experiences.

Why Kentucky?

Kentucky is known for its rich terrain and healthy deer population, making it a prime location for hunters. However, not all counties are created equal when it comes to deer hunting. Some seem to produce larger and more plentiful bucks than others.

Factors to Consider

When discussing the best counties for deer hunting, here are some factors I’ve been considering:

  • Deer Population Density: Some areas may have a higher number of deer, which increases your chances of spotting one.
  • Trophy Potential: Are there counties known specifically for producing large bucks?
  • Accessibility: Is the hunting land easy to navigate or are there restrictions?
  • Local Regulations: Each county may have different hunting regulations that could affect your hunting plans.

Top Counties for Consideration

I’ve heard some buzz about a few counties, and I’d love to hear more from those who have hunted there:

  • Bourbon County: Known for its picturesque landscapes and healthy deer populations. Buck sightings are frequent.
  • Larue County: Reported to have a great success rate for hunters looking for trophy bucks.
  • Greenup County: It’s been said that this county offers a good mix of deer density and accessibility.

If you’ve hunted in any of these counties or have other recommendations, please share what worked for you! Any tips on the best times to hunt or specific locations within these counties would also be super helpful.

Wrap-Up

I really appreciate any advice or insight anyone can provide. It’s always great to learn from others’ experiences, and it will help me plan my hunting trip better. Thanks in advance!

I’ve found that Clark County is one of the best for trophy deer. The DNR has reported consistently high populations, making hunting here quite successful.

That’s great to know! I’ve also heard that Fayette County has its fair share of big bucks too. Anyone had luck there?

I’ve hunted in Jefferson County, and while I saw a lot of deer, trophy-sized ones were hard to come by. Maybe it’s just the pressure from other hunters?

Absolutely! I think pressure plays a big role. I had better luck in Meade County where fewer hunters go.

What about the data from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife? Their harvest reports show that counties like Grant and Boone also have sizeable populations!

Good point! I always look at those reports before planning my trips. It pays to be informed!

Anyone ever hear of great success in Owsley County? I’ve read that it’s underrated, but haven’t tried it myself.

I think we should also consider the weather conditions during hunting season. It can really affect deer movement. What do you all think?

You’re right! I’ve seen more activity on cooler nights. Perfect for those early morning hunts!

That’s true, but don’t forget about the full moon! I’ve had some interesting hunts during those times. It’s kind of a wild card, right?

Haha, yes! Maybe we should make a hunting calendar based on moon phases. Might be worth a shot!

Absolutely! Also consider using trail cameras to monitor movement. It can drastically improve your odds during the hunt!

Don’t forget about the importance of timing! Early morning or late afternoon hunts seem to yield the best results. And, of course, being patient is key.

So true! Last year, I had a big one come in after I sat silently for hours. Sometimes it’s just about being there at the right time!

I personally find using calls effective, especially during the rut. Have you tried grunt calls or rattling horns? They really can draw in those big bucks!

I haven’t, but I’ve heard they can be quite effective! Any tips on when to use them?
