Anyone Have Tips for Successful Deer Hunting in Missouri?

I’m gearing up for deer hunting season in Missouri and I’m looking for some advice from fellow hunters. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, any tips you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Here’s what I’m particularly interested in:

  • Local Regulations: Are there specific laws I should be aware of this season? What are the current rules regarding tags, seasons, and bag limits?
  • Best Practices: What techniques have you found most effective for hunting in Missouri’s terrain? Any specific calls or scents you recommend?
  • Gear Recommendations: What gear do you swear by? From camouflage and boots to rifles and bows, I’d love to hear what works for you.
  • Hunting Spots: If you’re open to sharing, what are your go-to locations for deer hunting in Missouri? Are there any hidden gems or state parks I should check out?
  • Personal Stories: I love hearing about people’s experiences! If you have a memorable hunt or a story about a big one that got away, please share. It helps to learn from each other’s journeys.

I’m excited to connect with you all and hopefully pick up some solid advice before the season kicks off. Looking forward to your responses!

When hunting deer in Missouri, the early morning and late evening are the best times to be out. Deer are most active during these hours, especially around food sources.

Absolutely! I set up my stand near a cornfield, and I’ve had great success. Baiting really helps draw them in.

I’ve noticed deer are also more active during a full moon. It seems counterintuitive, but I swear it makes a difference!

Baiting is allowed in certain seasons in Missouri, but be sure to check the regulations to avoid any fines!

That’s a good point, @andersenkenneth! Understanding the regulations is crucial. I always refer to the Missouri Department of Conservation website before my trips.

The other day, I went out at 5 AM only to realize it was too bright already! Timing is everything. Lesson learned the hard way.

So true! I once sat in the woods for hours and saw nothing. Now I scout ahead to find their trails before I hunt.

Remember to stay downwind of the deer! They have an incredible sense of smell, and one whiff can send them running.

Haha, yes! My buddy learned that the hard way when he used a strong cologne. He didn’t see a single deer that day.

What about calling techniques? I’ve heard mixed reviews. Do any of you use calls while hunting?

I find that grunting works pretty well, especially during the rut. It can be very effective in luring bucks closer to your position.

Agreed! I’ve also had luck with doe bleats. Just patience and practice is key!

Hey everyone, I’m starting to gear up for deer season! Can anyone clarify the current licensing requirements for Missouri? I heard there might have been some changes recently.

Absolutely, lucerobrian! As of this year, Missouri requires hunters to have a valid deer hunting permit and a hunter education certification if born on or after January 1, 1967.

Don’t forget about the specific zones for hunting! Missouri has some regulations that vary by area. Make sure to check which zone you’ll be hunting in.

That’s a great point, edwardsangela! I always double-check the regulations for my area. Last season, I almost got caught because I didn’t realize my zone had different deer limits!

Anyone know when the new regulations come out? I want to make sure I’m fully compliant and avoid any fines this season.

The new hunting digest is usually released a month before the season. It’s a great resource for all updated regulations. Don’t be shy, consult it before you head out!

Thanks for that, danathomas! Does anyone have tips on where to find this digest online?
