Kentucky & Tennessee Invaded By 100,000+ Guns But; Everyone Happy!

The latest wave of Hurricanes in Florida and Alabama caused an evacuation of about 1,000,000 people.  Leaving your home and traveling to another state can be a frightening experience for any person.  Not knowing where you and your family are going to find shelter, not knowing where any medical facilities are located in case someone is sick or hurt, not having any friends or relatives other than your immediate family to help is traumatic.  Now throw in the constant threat of terrorism, and you have valid reasons why so many law abiding citizens are legally armed.  This was the first time so many legally armed citizens left their home state traveling into other states that honored their state license or permit to carry weapons.  They traveled with their pistols. This helped them with their concerns about protecting their family and themselves.

No Alarms Went Off In Kentucky or Tennessee Regarding The 100,000+ Guns Because These Were Law Abiding Legally Armed Citizens.

Imagine this same situation happening in New Jersey or Illinois.  Knowing that about 100,000+ non-residents were about to enter either one of these states, and they were all armed! The police would be on alert, the National Guard would be on call, and the resident population would be told to stay indoors because of the possibility of gun fights all day long!  Well, gunfights did not occur.

The difference between Illinois and New Jersey compared to Kentucky and Tennessee and most other Southern States, is that law enforcement officers in the Southern States understand that the individuals who have submitted to federal criminal background investigations, local investigations, firearm training, plus spent their time and money to obtain the authorization to legally carry a weapon, are not the people to fear.  Most peace officers in the South possess a license or permit to carry weapons.  They obtained a license or permit in order to carry weapons into states that did not allow them to carry a firearm off-duty.  Now, with the National Cop Carry Law, HR 218, they do not need to have a license or permit to carry since they are covered under the new federal law.

Knowing The Laws & Restrictions In Other States That Honor Your State License or Permit To Carry Is Important

We at legallyarmed.com received thousands of e-mails and letters for requests where our legally armed state travel guides could be located in the hurricane states.  Locations that stocked the books sold out quickly.  Although the publications could be ordered on the Internet at:

www.legallyarmed.com/catalog

there was not enough time to have them delivered by mail.  As a result, we tried to fax and send by e-mail, the information people were seeking.  However, we could not accommodate everyone who requested information because of the storms.  As a result of this experience, we are now working with Sheriff's and Chiefs of Police across America to help insure this information is available through their offices.  Law Enforcement Agencies who want to offer this information to their county residents who possess a license or permit to carry, should contact us by e-mail.

Families who had a relative in law enforcement who was traveling with them, were able to fall on the recent federal law passed in July 22, 2004 that allows active law enforcement officers to carry their pistol in all fifty states off-duty.  However, this law stipulates that law enforcement officers must comply with the restrictions in each state where guns may not be carried.  Active law enforcement officers and some retirees who got in touch with us early enough about our new book addressing H.R. 218, "The Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act of 2004", were able to obtain this publication that lists all fifty states and the restrictions in each state at www.legallyarmed.com/catalog

What States Honor Other States?

Since the Bush Administration has been in office, there have been tremendous gains in the area of reciprocity between the states.  At one time, the Florida Concealed Weapon License stood alone as the only CCW License that other Right To Carry States would honor.  Now, a multitude of states recognize the right of legally armed citizens to carry weapons in their state.

The list below shows the gains made over the last few years.  This list ranks each state as to the number of other states that honor their license or permit to carry weapons.  Kentucky is ranked # 1 because they have 29 states that honor the Kentucky CCDW License.  NOTE:  The states of Alaska and Vermont are included in the ranking even though no license or permit is requited to carry a firearm by law abiding citizens in these two states.

An area showing how much thought has been given to this subject by the state of Alaska is the fact that even though no license or permit is required to carry a firearm in Alaska, the state of Alaska issues a permit to any of their state residents who want one, and can pass a criminal background investigation.  Doing this allows their state residents to travel into other states legally armed.  Although Vermont has the same law basically honoring the 2nd Amendment, they do not issue a permit to their state residents.  As a result, their state residents must obtain a non-resident license or permit from another state [ I.e. Florida or Virginia ], in order to be legal to carry a weapon in some other states.  Alaska has thought about the safety of their state residents, by offering them the mechanism to legally carry a pistol if they desire, when they travel to other states.

Could These Gains Have Occurred Under Another Administration?

The Clinton Administration was not known as advocates of any type of firearm laws that would allow lenient ownership or carrying of firearms.  The gains in state reciprocity shown in the list below lean towards a more favorable administration regarding firearms and the right of self-defense.  The number of states honoring other states license or permit to carry firearms could not have come about without the blessing of the Bush Administration and the Republican Party.  Some may say that this statement is not correct and that a Democratic Administration could offer similar gains.  The facts are clear on this issue...the high number of reciprocal arrangements between the states listed below, occurred on the watch of the current administration and; the Law Enforcement Safety Act of 2004, was signed into law by the Bush Administration.
