Question # 1

Why don't law enforcement officers seem to know anything about CCW Laws?  I have been stopped and hassled about carrying my pistol on me or having a loaded pistol in my car in Georgia.  According to Georgia Law this is allowed because of my Georgia Firearms License but, the police don't seem to know anything about this law.  I once had a problem in Tennessee when I drove thru Chattanooga and was pulled over for speeding.  The officer told me I was not legal to carry a loaded pistol in Tennessee & he took my pistol.  I had to go to court to get it back.  Even the judge was irritated with the officer for taking my gun.  It just seems reasonable that law enforcement officers should know more about CCW Laws.  Robert Green, Georgia

Answer:

The primary reason is that law enforcement officers receive little or no training about CCW Laws, CCW individuals, or anything on this subject.

Florida was one of the initial states to enact a carry law.   I received no information on this subject at the Police Academy or during any in-service training.  Whatever I learned came from other officers or something I read.

I have spoken with active law enforcement officers, and they tell me the same thing.  There still is no training regarding this subject.  Now that active law enforcement officers and retired L.E.O.'s that meet the requirements of the "Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act", can carry a concealed pistol in any state, there is little or no reason why they think they should know anything about this subject.

As long as law enforcement officers can carry their pistol on or off duty in any state, most L.E.O.'s will not go out of their way to learn anthingy about this subject.  They will only learn about CCW Laws when it becomes mandatory and it is taught to them at the Police Academy or during in-service training. This is unfortunate but, it is the truth.
