The majority of individuals, who obtain a permit or license to carry, never practice once they receive their authorization.  This is especially true where firearms are concerned.  If they have to pass a gun range qualification to obtain their state permit or license, that may be the last time they are on a gun range.  Is it important that they should practice with their firearm?   The answer will be different depending on who is asked this question.

The response from someone in law enforcement will probably be yes.  They are required to re-qualify each year.  This is for their own safety, and to make sure that their department has the type of paperwork to show the officers have been properly trained.  This paperwork may be used in court if required.  The officers have been conditioned to realize that without proper training or practice, their response to an incident where it is necessary to use a firearm, may not have the best outcome.

If you ask a firearm trainer, their response will be yes. They believe that a person who carries a gun should be able to use the gun quickly, accurately, and safely.  The more training a person has, the better they can respond to an incident.  More training also increases the income to the trainer [this is never mentioned by the trainers].

If you ask this question to a person who is authorized to carry a gun, the average response is "I am legal to carry the gun, that's  enough".  Is it enough?  Statistics show that the majority of people who are legal to carry will never have to draw their gun in self-defense.   Statistics also reveal that the person who has kept up their marksmanship and taken some additional training, has survived the incident.  Naturally the more training and practice a person has received, the better the odds on their survival.  Isn't that the reason the majority of people obtain the authorization to carry a gun...survival!   Let us know what your thoughts are on this subject.  Use the response form at the bottom of this page.  We will post the responses to this subject on our web page.
