When any state begins to consider a carry law, opposition surfaces. Groups and individuals who do not believe that a citizen should be allowed a means of self-defense if it involves a firearm. Politicians, anti-gun organizations, and law enforcement. Those in law enforcement make the most impact with the general public. When the battle is over and a carry law is passed, we remember the groups and organizations who opposed the law but; we forget about some of the individuals who spoke in defense of the law. This is especially true regarding individuals in law enforcement who stood up and made their voice heard in support of the law. It is time we acknowledged these individuals for their help. This will be a regular column regarding these individuals. Vonore, Tennessee is a small town in the eastern section of the state. The Chief of Police is Warren Husted, Jr.. He has been in law enforcement over twenty-five years. The majority of those years were spent in Virginia law enforcement. He is a member of most pro-gun organizations. He has held NRA instructor credentials for as long as he has been in law enforcement. He has always spoken out in defense of a citizens right to bear arms. His actions also mirror his words. There was a particular incident I can recall when he stopped a speeding car. The man was taking his wife to the hospital. The driver told Chief Husted that he had a gun in the car, and he didn't want to get in trouble. The Chief asked him if he had done anything wrong. The man said no, he was only driving fast because his wife needed medical attention at the hospital. When the Chief asked the man if he had a permit to carry the gun, the man said no. Chief Husted told the man he was going to take the gun, and the man could pick it up at the police station when he left the hospital [he did this so the man would not get into trouble with any other officer or the hospital security]. When the man came to the police station, he was nervous. When he met with Chief Husted, he wasn't sure what was going to happen. The Chief asked the man how his wife was doing. They spoke for a few minutes, then the Chief gave the man back his gun and the ammunition. The man asked the Chief if he was in trouble. The Chief reminded the man that he had told the Chief that he didn't do anything wrong, he was just taking his wife to the hospital and was driving too fast. Chief Husted gave the man back his gun, and told him it might make sense to get a permit if he was going to carry the gun all the time. Chief Warren Husted's words and actions have shown he believes in the right of law abiding citizens to bear arms. We all appreciate his words and actions [if you would like to drop him an e-mail letting him know this, send it go gene@legallyarmed.com I will forward it to Chief Husted. END |
