Question # 1 " How often should I clean my carry gun ?" Samantha "Sam" Whiley, Texas answer The standard answer is every time you shoot your gun you need to clean it. This is especially true if it is you carry gun. However, to answer your question correctly I would need to know how you carry your gun. This is necessary because a carry gun needs to be as clean as it can be. If you carry your pistol in a purse or in some manner that is not in a holster, you might need to clean it each week, or even a shorter time, to insure it works properly. The more a pistol comes in contact with dirt and grime, the higher the possibility it will pick-up some crap that will prohibit it from functioning correctly. I see pistols all the time that are carried under the seat of a car or in a purse like yours is carried. The owner has taken it to a gun store to be looked at because it is not shooting correctly or occasionally fails to go into battery. When I examine the pistol, I sometimes wonder what the owner looks like. Does the owner take a bath or shower every day or not? I'm not saying that the pistol is a reflection of what the owner looks like because if it was, the owner would have to carry three or four guns because everybody would hate this person because of their stench! When I tell people this, they seem to understand better why a carry gun needs to be clean. Samantha, the worst time to find out a carry gun is not clean is when you need to use it for self-defense and it fails to work correctly. Clean it every time you shoot it and if you carry your gun in a purse, inspect it at least every week to make sure it is clean. The cleaner your carry gun, the higher your chance of survival because it will function when you need to use it.
