Question 1

"I recently completed a course to obtain my North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit.  I was the only female in the class.  I noticed that most of the men carried a knife on their belt or clipped to their pocket.  I will be carrying my pistol in my purse.  Should I carry a knife and why?"                           Becky [last name withheld by request] Ashville, North Carolina

Answer

Becky, Since the stone age men have carried and used knives for utilitarian purposes.  In today's society small to medium size folders fill this role.  In many areas of the nation, knives may be carried without many of the restrictions placed upon handguns.

Knives can also be used in close range fighting, such as a backup if your handgun malfunctions or;  if dropped or taken away.  Knives are easy to conceal, seldom malfunction, never have to be reloaded and, they are almost invisible when in motion.

At close range, a knife can be used to slow down or disable a larger, stronger attacker.  One of my students was a victim of road rage.  While sitting at a congested intersection in his automobile, the assailant reached into his window and began choking him with both hands.  Rather than attempt to draw his pistol and risk a shot, he drew his Spyderco Knife, cut his attackers wrist and effected release.

Like every topic in the self-defense community of trainers, there are differing opinions as to the size, blade configuration and method of deployment of an edged weapon.  From a defensive standpoint; anyone with a knife in their hands is dangerous!

As a permit holder, you should have been introduced to the Tuellers Drill, also known as the 21' rule for defending against knife attackers.  Sometimes the best way to learn to defend against a particular weapon is to learn how to use it.  Learn its advantages and limitations.  Find a knowledgeable edged weapons instructor to train with.

Ethically and legally, be aware that if you choose to use a knife as a weapon, the use of deadly force applies to knives as well as firearms.  Butch Hill

NOTE

Mr. Hill brought up a very good point that we need to address.

Tuellers Drill should be seen by every legally armed person so they can understand just how dangerous a person wielding a knife can be.

Some instructors may not be familiar with this important training scenario so, Legallyarmed.com will produce a video for our main page so everyone can view just how important the 21' rule is to survival.

It is important for every legally armed person to know just how fast this type of attack can happen and, how difficult it is to try and defend against a knife attack.

only instructors with years of experience like Mr. hill, can immediately spot a defect like not being exposed to this important training information.

We thank Mr. Hill for bringing up this important aspect of training.
