Is My Old Friend My New Enemy Or, Was He Always My Enemy?
By: Gene Kennedy
My high school days
were spent at Carteret Prepatory School in West Orange, New Jersey. I was recruited
there because I played sports well, and my family believed that a small all male school
would provide more discipline, and a better education than a public school. This was an
expensive private school that catered to American, European, and Middle Eastern students.
Americans and students without an American citizenship shared dorm life in addition
to their daytime educational requirements. Because of this, we all learned different
languages [mostly cuss words], and different cultures and traditions. It was not the
same political environment in those years 1960's, that there is now. American was in
a cold war with Russia. This was our enemy and there were no Russian students
enrolled. The school was a pet project of the founder of the Noxzema skin care
company. Mr. Hoff ran the school with
discipline. In addition to the Russians, we all considered Mr. Hoff our enemy!
Omar Was A Saudi National
Omar was from Saudi
Arabia. His family was of high political ranking and influential. The family
believed that sons should be schooled in America to receive a better education and become
familiar with American culture. These families paid over $50,000 per year for their
sons to attend this school. A high cost even in today's dollars, but it was pocket
change to some of the families even in the 1960's. Especially those who came from Saudi Arabia.
Because of the political nature of
some of the students families, and the wealth of others, bodyguards were always around.
Being around bodyguards was something we all learned to live with at an early age.
One thing that we all enjoyed was when one of the bodyguards would teach us
shooting and self protection skills. I always found it interesting that most of
these bodyguards learned their skills from training provided from the U.S. government.
Chance Meeting With Omar In Atlanta
I spotted Omar at a
restaurant in Atlanta. I was there to make a stop at the Glock factory in Smyrna,
Georgia. The last time I had seen Omar, I was still in the military uniform of my
country. I had been called back into uniform because of the riots going on in
Newark, New Jersey. I had just completed two years on active duty during the
Vietnam conflict, and I thought I was finished. It was then that I leaned a soldier
can be called up until there are only women and children left. Shocked the hell out
of me.
As I approached Omar in
the restaurant, I was smiling and walking quickly towards him. It was then that I
recalled the tense attitude of bodyguards when they consider a person a threat. Two
husky Middle Eastern men pinned me between them. Knowing they considered my actions
a threat to their client, I placed my hands behind my head and stopped any forward
movement.
At first because of the
passing of the years, Omar did not recognize me without a full head of hair, thirty pounds
heavier, and thirty-five years later. Within a few seconds he shouted out "Gene
my old friend, how the hell are you'? I was glad he recognized me because the two
water buffalo's were about to squeeze the air out of me. He motioned for the
bodyguards to let me come forward.
Conversation Turns Ugly
We began talking about old
times. Life, family, old friends, that sort of talk. However, it was not long
before our talk turned to more disturbing areas. "I can't say I was surprised
at the attacks of 9-11", he said. "Americans have an arrogant and self
promoting trait that causes others to dislike them and their culture." The
words sent a chill up my back.
I could have changed the
subject and moved back to less dangerous conversation but, it was something that could not
be dismissed. After all, I was speaking to someone I had lived with, spent a good
deal of my youth with, and considered him a friend. He was also educated by our
system, and made millions of dollars dealing with Americans.
Ending The Meeting & Leaving Without
Firing One Shot
"America was good
enough for you and your family when you needed to be educated. I see that America
has also helped you in your business life. If it didn't help, you would be shoveling
camel shit like most of the ungrateful members of your nation. You need to remember
something else while you are here. Fifteen of the nineteen camel sucking thugs who
caused the 9-11 attacks were Saudi nationals. Remember this before you start bad
mouthing Americans in a public place."
Body Guards Doing Their Job
His eyes opened wide, and
he began to yell all of the old cuss words he taught me as a teen. Hearing him yell
and being in an aggravated state, the bodyguards got up from their table and started
walking towards us. Seeing this, I motioned to Omar. As he looked at me, I moved my
carry vest open to reveal a .40 caliber Glock on my side. "I didn't mind them
putting their hands on me the first time but if they try and touch me again, one of them
and possibly you, is going to meet Allah real soon!"
Disturbing Thought
As I walked towards the
door with my eyes scanning the bodyguards to see if they were following me, I heard Omar
yelling; "Don't take offense, I wasn't speaking about you!", as if he was trying
to separate me from other Americans. I realize there are good and bad Americans,
just like there are good and bad individuals all over the world. But, don't preach
to me about Americans if you are not an American. I feel the same way when I flip
the TV channel and see Peter Jennings or Ted Koppel on the news. Americans listen to
them every day. They have been in American long enough to become American citizens.
Why haven't they?
As I was about to put the
key into the car door to continue my trip, a scary thought hit me. Did I just react
the same way as a Muslim reacts when one of their own is spoken about or harmed by some
type of attack? If this is true, we are all in for a dangerous and deadly
environment the next few years.
